Teaching Clocks and Daily Time
What it is
This is the first look at a clock face: finding the numbers 1 to 12, telling the short hand from the long one, and reading o'clock times such as 3:00 and 8:00. The times are tied to the day, so 8:00 is breakfast and 7:00 is bedtime.
When a child is ready
Begin once numerals to 12 are recognized on sight and the child knows the order they come in.
If they struggle
If both hands confuse the child, tape the long hand onto the 12 for a few days so every time is an o'clock time and only the short hand moves. Point at the short hand and say the hour name each time, then put the minute hand back once the hours are secure.
