Teaching Converting Units
What it is
Converting units rewrites a measurement in a different unit of the same kind: feet to inches, kilograms to grams, hours to minutes. Multiplying moves toward smaller units and dividing moves toward larger ones.
When a child is ready
Begin once multiplication and division facts are fluent and the common equivalences are known.
If they struggle
Before computing, ask whether the answer should be a bigger or a smaller number: inches are small, so feet turned into inches must give more of them. That one question catches most reversed answers. Keep the equivalences written beside the work rather than relying on memory, since a forgotten 5,280 turns a right method into a wrong answer.
