Teaching Length and Distance
What it is
Here length is measured and compared across units, inches, feet, yards, and miles or centimeters, meters, and kilometers, including converting, adding two lengths, and finding the difference between distances.
When a child is ready
Begin once a ruler is used accurately and the child can convert between two units in the same system.
If they struggle
Convert everything to one unit before adding or subtracting; feet and inches mixed in the same column is where the answers go wrong. For the larger units, pace out a hundred yards in the yard and watch the odometer over a measured mile, because a mile is otherwise only a word that appears in problems.
