Teaching Measurement

What it is

Measurement means choosing a unit and finding how many of it an object takes: inches or centimeters for length, cups for capacity, pounds or grams for weight. The youngest sheets use cubes and direct comparison; the older ones use rulers, scales, and conversion between units.

When a child is ready

A child is ready once units can be laid end to end with no gaps and no overlaps, and counted.

If they struggle

Most wrong answers are gaps or overlaps in the units, or a unit that changed partway, such as measuring half a table in cubes and half in paper clips. Watch one object measured out loud and correct the placing rather than the arithmetic. Measure things that matter, a shelf before it is cut or flour before it is baked, so the number has a consequence.
