Teaching Same and Different
What it is
These sheets show a row of pictures or shapes and ask the child to mark the one that does not belong, or to match the two that are alike. The row usually differs in one way only, such as color, size, or the number of sides.
When a child is ready
Begin once the child can point out one way two objects differ.
If they struggle
When the odd one out is chosen for a different reason, accept the reason if it is actually true and then ask for a second one; a child who finds two differences is looking properly. Name the feature aloud, these are all red and this one is blue, so the habit becomes testing one feature at a time rather than glancing at the whole row.
