Teaching Missing Number Equations
What it is
A missing number equation puts the blank somewhere other than the end: 4 + __ = 7, or __ − 2 = 5. The child works out which number makes the sentence true.
When a child is ready
Teach it after plain addition and subtraction sentences are solved confidently and the equals sign is understood as 'the same as'.
If they struggle
Children commonly ignore the blank and add the two numbers they can see. Build the sentence with counters, cover the missing part with your hand, and ask what is under the hand; then read the finished sentence aloud and count both sides to check they really are the same amount.
