Teaching Addition and Subtraction Fact Families
What it is
A fact family is three numbers that make four related facts: 3, 4, and 7 give 3 + 4 = 7, 4 + 3 = 7, 7 − 3 = 4, and 7 − 4 = 3. It is how a child sees that subtraction undoes addition.
When a child is ready
Teach it once both joining and taking away are understood and the child can name the whole and the two parts of a group of objects.
If they struggle
Write the three numbers in a triangle, the largest at the top, and have the child read around it four ways. If a subtraction answer is wrong, point out that the answer has to be one of the other two numbers already in the triangle.
