Five Loaves, Two Fish

John 6:8-13 (KJV)

A free counting activity for ages 5–6 from John 6:8-13. A child counts the five barley loaves and two small fishes a boy brought to Jesus, and tells what Jesus did with them. It joins early number work to the passage's own detail, which is that the little that was brought was enough.

Teacher notes

Read John 6:9 and 11 aloud. Explain that the boy's small amount of food could not feed the crowd on its own. Jesus gave thanks and provided enough. Avoid claiming a basket shown in an illustration is the boy's basket: that detail is not stated.

Answer

Five loaves and two fish (John 6:9). Jesus gave thanks and distributed the food (6:11); the disciples gathered twelve baskets of fragments (6:13).
