Teaching Rounding Numbers

What it is

Rounding to the nearest ten, hundred, or thousand replaces a number with the closest 'round' number at that place, using the digit to the right to decide.

When a child is ready

Teach after place value to the thousands is secure.

If they struggle

Underline the rounding place, circle the digit to its right, and decide. A number line between the two neighbors settles any doubt.
