Teaching Writing and Reading Numbers
What it is
These pages move between a three-digit number and its parts in both directions: writing 836 as 800 + 30 + 6, and building the number back from 700 + 70 + 9.
When a child is ready
Ready once hundreds, tens, and ones are named confidently in a three-digit number.
If they struggle
Going from parts to the number, children write what they hear, so 300 + 40 + 7 becomes 300407. Have them draw three boxes for the three digits and fill each box from its matching part. When a part is missing, as in 200 + 10, the empty place takes a 0.
