Teaching Missing Place Values
What it is
These pages give a three-digit number split into its parts with one part missing, such as 5 + 400 + __ = 485. The parts are printed out of order, so each one has to be matched to its place before the blank can be filled.
When a child is ready
Ready once the child can say how many hundreds, tens, and ones a three-digit number has.
If they struggle
Have the child read the total by place, four hundred, eighty, five, and cross off each part already printed; what is left is the blank. Zeros trip children up: in 8 + __ + 300 = 308 the missing tens part is 0, not nothing at all.
