Teaching Rounding to the Nearest Ten and Hundred
What it is
Rounding swaps a number for the nearest ten or hundred: 62 becomes 60, 380 becomes 400. The digit just to the right of the rounding place decides which neighbor is closer, and the later pages round four- and six-digit numbers the same way.
When a child is ready
Ready once the child can name the ten just below and the ten just above any two-digit number.
If they struggle
Ask which two tens the number sits between, mark it on a short number line drawn between them, and look at which end it is nearer. Numbers ending in 5 sit exactly halfway, so they follow an agreement rather than a distance; teach those last.
