Teaching Numbers in Expanded Form
What it is
Expanded form splits a number into what each digit is worth: 462 is written 400 + 60 + 2. The digits do not change, only the way their value is written out.
When a child is ready
Ready once the child can point to the hundreds, tens, and ones digit in a three-digit number and name each place.
If they struggle
Put the number in a place value chart and have the child read each column with its zeros attached, four hundred, sixty, two, before adding the plus signs. A digit of 0 contributes nothing and is left out, so 305 is 300 + 5, which surprises most children the first time.
