Teaching Word Root spect (look)
What it is
The root spect means to look. An inspector looks into something, a spectator looks on, spectacles are what a person looks through, and to suspect is to look at someone with doubt.
When a child is ready
Teach it once the child reads multi-syllable words and can hear a root buried inside a longer word.
If they struggle
Underline spect and read only what is left: in-, specta-, re-, su-. Then name the kind of looking: looking into, looking on, looking again. The words where the looking is figurative, such as respect, need that connection said out loud or the child will not see it.
