Teaching Greek Root: bio = life
What it is
The Greek root bio means life. Biology is the study of living things, a biography is the written story of someone's life, and an antibiotic works against the living germs that make a person sick.
When a child is ready
Teach it once the child reads three- and four-syllable words in chunks and has seen that a word can be built from parts.
If they struggle
Long science words overwhelm a child who reads them letter by letter. Find bio first and box it, then read what is left: bio-logy, bio-graphy. Ask what the word has to do with life before looking at the rest; the answer usually gives the meaning away.
