Teaching Greek Root: astro, aster = star
What it is
The Greek root astro, also spelled aster, means star. An astronaut is a star sailor, astronomy is the study of the stars and planets, an asteroid is a small star-like body, and a disaster once meant a bad star, a sign that things would go wrong.
When a child is ready
Teach it once the child reads four-syllable words in chunks and has worked with a root or two before.
If they struggle
Disaster is the word that puzzles children, because nothing about it seems starry. Tell how people once read the stars for warnings, and the meaning stays. For reading, find astro or aster, box it, and read the remaining part separately.
