Teaching Greek Root: meter = measure
What it is
The Greek root meter, also spelled metr, means measure. A speedometer measures speed, a kilometer and a centimeter are measures of length, the diameter is the measure across a circle, and geometry began as the measuring of land.
When a child is ready
Teach it once the child reads long words in parts; knowing geo from Grade 3 helps with geometry.
If they struggle
The stress moves and hides the root: ki-LOM-eter and speed-OM-eter, but CEN-ti-meter. Say each word slowly in its parts, then at normal speed. In symmetry and geometry the spelling shortens to metr; underline it so the family stays visible.
