Teaching Greek Root micro-
What it is
Micro- means small, and it sits at the front of a word. A microscope looks at small things, a microphone makes a small sound big, and a microbe is a living thing too small to see.
When a child is ready
This is a good first root, because its meaning is already visible in words the child knows, such as microscope and microwave.
If they struggle
Give the meaning first, then read the whole word and ask where the smallness is. When a word does not fit neatly, microwave is named for a short wave rather than a small oven, say so plainly, because a root points at a meaning rather than delivering the whole of it.
