Teaching Greek Root: dem = people
What it is
The Greek root dem means people. In a democracy the people choose their leaders, an epidemic is a sickness spreading among the people of one place, and a pandemic spreads among people everywhere.
When a child is ready
Teach it once the child reads multi-syllable words and can keep a root in mind while reading the parts around it.
If they struggle
Epidemic and pandemic are the pair to untangle: epi- is upon, pan- is all. If the root goes unnoticed, write the words in a column and line up dem. Words such as demand and remember hold the letters without the meaning, so always test with the question: is this about people?
