Teaching Word Roots: aud = hear
What it is
The Latin root aud means to hear. An audience is the people who hear a speaker, an auditorium is the room they sit in, audio is sound that is heard, and audible means loud enough to hear.
When a child is ready
Teach it once the child reads multi-syllable words and knows the sound of au, as in haul.
If they struggle
If the meaning does not come, put the word into a sentence containing the word hear: an audition is a chance to be heard. The spelling au is the usual slip; link it to a word the child already writes, such as August.
