Teaching Greek Root -scope
What it is
The root -scope means an instrument for looking, and it sits at the end of the word: a telescope looks far, a microscope looks at small things, a periscope looks around, a stethoscope listens at the chest.
When a child is ready
Teach it after front roots such as micro-, once the child expects long words to be built out of parts.
If they struggle
Always ask what the other half says: tele means far, micro means small, peri means around. Naming the pair, far and look, small and look, is what makes the root stick, so do not drill -scope by itself.
