Teaching Suffix -ture
What it is
The ending -ture says /cher/: picture, nature, future, capture, adventure. Sounded out letter by letter it comes out as 'tore' or 'tour', so it is taught as one chunk.
When a child is ready
Teach it once the child reads two-syllable words and hears the /ch/ sound at the end of words such as watch.
If they struggle
Cover the ending, read the front of the word, then add /cher/: pic-ture, fu-ture. Read it against -sure so the difference is heard, picture next to pleasure, since the two endings look alike and sound different.
