Teaching The -ance and -ence Suffixes
What it is
The suffixes -ance and -ence turn a describing or action word into a naming word for a state or quality: important becomes importance, silent becomes silence, different becomes difference, patient becomes patience.
When a child is ready
Teach it once the child reads the describing words these come from (important, silent, different) and the verbs behind others (perform, appear).
If they struggle
The two endings sound alike, so the ear cannot choose the spelling. The related word usually can: -ant goes with -ance (important, importance) and -ent goes with -ence (silent, silence). Where no relative helps, the word has to be learned by sight.
