Teaching Suffix -est
What it is
The ending -est compares three or more things and marks the far end of the group: tall, taller, tallest; fast, fastest; big, biggest. Adding it can double a final consonant or turn a final y into i.
When a child is ready
Teach -est with -er comparisons, once the child already uses comparing words in speech.
If they struggle
Line up three real objects and say the whole set aloud, long, longer, longest, before anything is written. When the spelling goes wrong, look at the base word: one short vowel with one final consonant doubles it (big, biggest), and a final y becomes i (happy, happiest).
