Teaching Suffixes -ful, -less, -ness, -ment, -y, -ly
What it is
A suffix is a word part added to the end of a base word. -ful means full of (hopeful, thankful), -less means without (hopeless, careless), -ness names a quality (kindness, sadness), -ly tells how (quickly, suddenly), and -ment and -y build naming and describing words the same way (payment).
When a child is ready
Teach suffixes once the prefixes un- and re- are understood, since both show that word parts carry meaning.
If they struggle
Pairs teach best: hopeful and hopeless, careful and careless share a base and mean opposite things. If spelling slips, remind the child that -ful has one l, and that a base ending in y changes it to i first: happy, happiness.
