Teaching The -ify Suffix
What it is
The suffix -ify makes a verb meaning to make: to simplify is to make simple, to notify is to make known, to identify is to make clear who or what something is, and to justify is to show that something is right.
When a child is ready
Teach it beside -ate and -ize, the other two verb-making endings.
If they struggle
The y says long i here, as in fly, which surprises children who expect long e. When an ending is added the y changes to i: identify, identified; notify, notifies. Practice the base and the changed form together.
