Teaching The -ate Suffix
What it is
The suffix -ate makes a verb meaning to make or to do: to create is to make something new, to celebrate is to do something special for a happy day, to operate is to make a machine work, and to separate is to make things stand apart.
When a child is ready
Teach it once the child reads three-syllable words and divides them into parts.
If they struggle
The ending is said two ways. In a verb it has a long a: to separate the socks. In a describing word it is quick and soft: two separate rooms. Let the sentence decide which one is needed, then read it aloud.
