Teaching Suffixes -tion and -sion

What it is

The endings -tion and -sion both say /shun/ and make a naming word out of an action word: act becomes action, confess becomes confession, express becomes expression. After certain bases, -sion softens to /zhun/, as in decision and television.

When a child is ready

Teach it once the child reads three-syllable words and no longer tries to sound out ti letter by letter.

If they struggle

Read the base and the noun as a pair: act and action, decide and decision. For spelling, a base ending in -d, -de, or -s usually takes -sion, and -tion is the common default; have the child say the base out loud before writing the ending.
