Teaching Suffix -sure
What it is
The ending -sure is read as one chunk rather than sounded out letter by letter. After a vowel it says /zher/, as in measure, treasure, pleasure, and leisure; after a consonant it says /sher/, as in pressure.
When a child is ready
Teach it once the child reads two-syllable words and handles other quiet endings such as -er and -le.
If they struggle
Read the front of the word and then add the chunk: mea plus sure, trea plus sure. This family is small, so put its members on one card and read it daily for a week; that short list covers nearly every -sure word a child will meet.
