Teaching Suffixes That Change Word Jobs
What it is
A suffix is a word part added to the end of a word that changes its job or meaning: -ful makes an adjective (hopeful), -ly makes an adverb (quickly), -er can name a person (teacher).
When a child is ready
Teach suffixes after prefixes and after the child can identify nouns, verbs, and adjectives.
If they struggle
Cover the suffix, read the base word, then add the suffix and ask what kind of word it became. Watch for spelling changes at the join (hope, hoping; happy, happiness).
