Teaching Suffix -ous
What it is
The ending -ous means 'full of' and makes a describing word: joy becomes joyous, danger becomes dangerous, fame becomes famous, nerve becomes nervous. It is said as /us/ at the end of the word.
When a child is ready
Teach it once the child reads three-syllable words and can say what the base word means on its own.
If they struggle
Say the meaning as a phrase before reading the word: full of joy, full of danger, full of nerve. If the child spells the ending -us, show that this ending is always -ous, and have them write three words they already know to prove it to themselves.
