Teaching The -ize Suffix
What it is
The suffix -ize makes a verb meaning to make or to do: to memorize is to put into memory, to organize is to put in order, to realize is to see that something is real or true, and to authorize is to give the right to act.
When a child is ready
Teach it after -ate and -ify; all three build verbs, and sorting them together is good practice.
If they struggle
The base is often hidden: memory inside memorize, real inside realize. Have the child find the word they already know and say how the ending changed it. Reading the base and the new verb as a pair keeps both the spelling and the meaning in view.
