Teaching Shape Composition
What it is
Shape composition is making a bigger shape out of smaller ones: two triangles make a square, six triangles make a hexagon, two squares make a rectangle. It is done with pattern blocks or cut-paper shapes before it is done on paper.
When a child is ready
Begin once the basic flat shapes are named and the child will turn a piece to make it fit.
If they struggle
When pieces will not fit, the child is usually not rotating them. Say turn it and let them spin the piece rather than showing where it goes. Trace the outline of the finished shape onto paper first so the target stays visible while the pieces are laid inside it.
