Teaching Angles
What it is
An angle is the amount of turn where two sides meet at a point. At this stage children sort angles into right angles, angles smaller than a right angle, and angles wider than one, and find the right angles in everyday shapes.
When a child is ready
Begin once the square corner of a shape can be identified and the child knows a square has four of them.
If they struggle
Use the corner of an index card as a right-angle tester: fit it into the angle and see whether the angle matches it, is narrower, or is wider. Long drawn arms make an angle look bigger than it is, so cover the arms with two fingers and look only at the corner where they meet.
