Teaching Bar Graphs
What it is
A bar graph shows amounts as bars measured against a scale. Reading one means checking what the scale counts by, ones or twos or fives, then reading each bar and comparing. Making one means labeling both axes and drawing each bar to the right height.
When a child is ready
A child is ready once counting by the scale's interval is easy and a number line can be read.
If they struggle
The two usual errors are reading a bar that stops between two marks as the mark below it, and ignoring a scale that goes up by fives. Have the child pencil the scale numbers along the axis first, then lay a ruler flat across from the top of each bar to the scale and read where it lands.
