Teaching Capacity and Volume
What it is
Capacity is how much a container holds, in cups, quarts, liters, or milliliters. Volume is the space a solid takes up, counted in cubic units or found by multiplying length by width by height.
When a child is ready
Begin once multiplication is fluent and real containers have been filled and compared.
If they struggle
Build a box out of cubes, count one layer, then count how many layers there are; that is why length times width times height works, and a child who has done it stops multiplying whichever three numbers appear. Keep capacity and volume in separate sessions until each is solid, because liters and cubic centimeters introduced together confuse both.
