Teaching Attributes of Shapes
What it is
Attributes are the countable facts about a shape: how many sides, how many corners, whether the sides are all equal, whether the corners are square. Shapes are sorted and identified by these rather than by how they look overall.
When a child is ready
Begin once sides can be counted reliably, including on a tilted or stretched shape.
If they struggle
Ask three questions about every figure in the same order, how many sides, are the sides all the same length, are the corners square, and write the three answers beside it before naming anything. Then sort the same pile twice, once by how many sides and once by whether the sides are equal, so it becomes plain that one shape belongs to more than one group at a time.
