Teaching Line Graphs and Line Plots
What it is
A line plot marks each piece of data with an X above a number line, so a stack of Xs shows how often that value came up. A line graph joins plotted points to show how something changes over time, such as temperature across a week.
When a child is ready
Begin once a number line is read confidently and amounts can be read from a bar graph.
If they struggle
On a line plot the usual error is answering with the number printed on the line instead of the number of Xs stacked above it. Ask which question is being answered, how many children scored four, or what score did they get, and have the child point at the Xs while counting. On a line graph, trace the line with a finger and say rising, falling, or level before reading any number off it.
