Teaching Picture Graphs

What it is

A picture graph shows data with one small picture for each thing counted, so four apple pictures means four apples. Children read across the rows and answer how many, which row has more, and how many more.

When a child is ready

Begin once one-to-one counting is accurate and two small numbers can be compared.

If they struggle

If the child judges by how long a row looks instead of counting it, have them cross off each picture as it is counted. When the pictures are drawn at different sizes, say plainly that only the number of pictures counts and not how big any one of them is.
