Teaching Symmetry and Transformations
What it is
A shape has line symmetry when a fold line makes the two halves match exactly. Transformations are the moves that do not change the shape itself: a slide, a flip, and a turn. Later sheets ask the child to draw the missing half of a figure across the line.
When a child is ready
Begin once the child can fold paper in half and judge whether the edges meet.
If they struggle
Test symmetry by folding a paper copy rather than by looking at it; a rectangle folded corner to corner shows plainly that a diagonal is not a line of symmetry, which almost every child assumes it is. To draw a mirror half, work one point at a time, counting squares out from the fold line on each side.
