Teaching Circles
What it is
Circle work names the parts: the center, the radius from the center to the edge, the diameter all the way across through the center, and the circumference around the outside. The diameter is always twice the radius.
When a child is ready
Begin once measuring with a ruler is accurate and doubling and halving are easy.
If they struggle
Have the child draw a circle with a compass, mark the center, and measure four or five radii to see for themselves that they are all the same length. If radius and diameter get swapped, fold a paper circle in half: the fold is the diameter, and half of the fold is the radius, so doubling and halving have somewhere to sit.
