Teaching Coordinate Plane

What it is

The coordinate plane locates a point with an ordered pair of numbers: the first counts across from the origin, the second counts up. So (3, 5) means three to the right and five up.

When a child is ready

Begin once a number line is read in both directions and a two-step instruction can be followed.

If they struggle

Reversed pairs are the standard error. Say it the same way every single time, across the hall then up the stairs, and have the child run a finger along the bottom axis before lifting it. Plotting a picture from a list of points shows a swapped pair at once, because the drawing bends in the wrong place and the child can see which point did it.
