Teaching Tens and Ones

What it is

Tens and ones is the first step of place value: a two-digit number is some tens and some ones, so 36 is three tens and six ones.

When a child is ready

Begin when the child counts to 100 and can count by tens.

If they struggle

Group real objects into tens with rubber bands or cups. Ask 'how many tens? how many left over?' and write the digits in that order.
