Teaching Opinion Writing
What it is
Opinion writing says what the child thinks and then gives a reason: the best season is summer, because we swim. The opinion comes easily; the reason is the part that has to be taught.
When a child is ready
Begin once the child writes a sentence independently and can answer why do you think so out loud.
If they struggle
Give the frame in speech first, I think this because that, and let the child finish it aloud before writing. If the reason is only that they like it, ask one more question: what do you like about it? Keep the topics close to home, since a child cannot give reasons about something they have never experienced.
