Teaching Labeling
What it is
Labeling is writing the word for each part of a picture: the parts of a plant, the rooms of a house, the things on a table. It is the first writing that carries information rather than tells a story.
When a child is ready
Begin once the child can hear the sounds in a word and write most letters, even if the spelling is not yet correct.
If they struggle
Say the word slowly and let the child write the sounds they hear; a label spelled by sound is doing exactly the right work at this stage. If a picture stumps them, name it aloud together first, since the difficulty is usually the missing word rather than the writing. Read the finished labels back together.
