Teaching Explanatory Writing
What it is
Explanatory writing tells how something works or why something is so: how to feed a dog, why we wear coats in winter. The child names the subject and then gives the steps or the reasons in order.
When a child is ready
Begin once the child writes a sentence independently, however short, and can explain a familiar routine out loud.
If they struggle
Have the child say the whole explanation aloud while you count the steps on your fingers, then write one step per line. If the writing stalls, let them draw the steps in boxes and label each drawing before turning it into sentences. Supply the words first, next, and last.
