Teaching Suffix -ure
What it is
The suffix -ure makes a naming word out of an action word: fail becomes failure, depart becomes departure, mix becomes mixture, press becomes pressure. The ending is unstressed, which makes it easy to say and easy to misspell.
When a child is ready
Teach it after -ture and -sure, once the child reads those chunks without trying to sound them out.
If they struggle
Read the base word first and then add the ending: fail plus ure, depart plus ure. Sort the words by the letter in front of the ending, the t in mixture and the s in pressure, because it is that letter, not the ending itself, that changes how the word sounds.
