Teaching Suffix -ation
What it is
The ending -ation makes a naming word for an act or its result: inform becomes information, explore becomes exploration, celebrate becomes celebration. It is the longest of the /shun/ family, and the beat of the word falls just before it: cele-BRA-tion.
When a child is ready
Teach it after -tion and -ion, once the child reads four-syllable words without losing the front of the word.
If they struggle
Clap the syllables, find the stressed beat, then read from the front so the beginning is not swallowed. For spelling, look at the base: a final e is dropped (admire, admiration) and a base ending in -ate keeps only its a (educate, education).
