Teaching Adding the Suffix -ion (Making Nouns)
What it is
The suffix -ion turns an action word into a naming word: act becomes action, collect becomes collection, decide becomes decision. The verb often changes shape at the join, and that join is where the difficulty sits.
When a child is ready
Teach it once the child can tell a verb from a noun in a sentence and reads three-syllable words.
If they struggle
Say the sentence both ways first, they collect stamps and they made a collection, so the change of job is heard before it is spelled. Then group the joins: a base ending in -ct just adds -ion, a base ending in -de becomes -sion, and a final e is dropped (create, creation).
