Teaching Suffixes -ory and -ary
What it is
The endings -ory and -ary sound nearly alike at the end of a long word: history, memory, factory, victory against library, ordinary, necessary, dictionary. Because the ending is unstressed, the vowel cannot be heard and must be learned word by word.
When a child is ready
Teach it once the child reads four-syllable words and has met other unstressed endings such as -ence and -ance.
If they struggle
Say the word deliberately while writing it, sounding the ending exactly as spelled, or-y and ar-y, and then say it normally. Work only with the words the child actually uses in writing, such as February, library, and memory, rather than the whole family at once.
